Menengai are the rugby sevens champions

Menengai High School are the new Rift Valley Secondary Schools Rugby Sevens champions.

They achieved the feat after hammering Simotwo from Elgeyo Marakwet County 27-0 in a one-sided match at Hills School, Eldoret, in the Rift Valley Secondary Schools Term Two A Games yesterday.

However, both teams have qualified for the national secondary schools championships that will be hosted in Mombasa next month.

Menengai scored five tries through Austin Sikutwa, Boniface Wasonga, Davies Nyaundi, Benson Mwata and Anthony Kibet, with Anthony Mwangi making one conversion.

Menengai Head Coach Evans Adenya said their main focus is the National Championships ahead of the regional games.

“After our qualification into the National Championships, my main task is to give my boys a two-day off before we embark on the preparations for the National Championships ahead of the East African Games in Gulu in Uganda in August,” he said in a post match interview.

On their part, Simotwo Principal Edwin Kosgey said they are going back to the drawing board to correct on their mistakes witnessed in their previous matches as they get ready for the national championships.

To the final, Menengai walloped Kipsangui of Uasin Gishu 24-0 while Simotwo dismissed Bwake of Trans Nzoia 3-0.

Former national football champions St Anthony of Trans Nzoia romped into the quarterfinals of the Under 16 football championships after seeing off Menengai High Schools 1-0 in their final preliminary match.

St Anthony were facing off with Simotwo in a quarterfinal match by our press time.

In other quarterfinal match, Moi Sirgoi took on Mweruti of Uasin Gishu after they (Mweruti) had beaten Olelunga of Narok 4-0 and Simotwo 2-1 in her last two preliminary matches before they booked their ticket to the quarterfinals.

Against Olelunga, Samuel Kirumba and Sammy Muya each scored a brace for Mweruti.

In the girls Under 16 football championships, former regional champions Wiyeta demolished Sacred Hill, Londiani of Kericho 6-1 after they had dismissed Tartar of West Pokot 2-1 in another match to romp into the quarterfinals.

Against Sacred Hill, Roda Wanyama and Esther Wafula each scored a brace for Wiyeta while Lavender Lihemu and Jenndricks Shikangwa each scored once.
