Kenya bowed out of the Main Cup Competition after losing the first two matches of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series in Sydney, Australia yesterday.

The Kenyans, however, recovered to win the third match to book a slot in the Challenge Trophy quarter-finals set to be played at the Allainz Stadium today.

In the opening match, series leaders South Africa dismissed Kenya 14-7 and later despatched Japan 32-0 in its first two matches to qualify for the Main Cup quarter-finals.

Against South Africa, Kenya led 7-0 at half time after Collins Injera off loaded to Augustine Lugonzo who touched down before Eden Agero made the conversion in the first half.

South Africa's The Blitzboks overwhelmed Kenya in the second half as Seabelo Senatla touched down twice with two conversions coming from Justin Geguld who was part of the South African Elite Player Development team that won the 2012 Safari Sevens in Nairobi.

During the match, Agero was shown the yellow card reducing Kenya’s momentum of play in the second half.

In the second match against England, Kenya surrendered a 12-0 lead to lose 12-17.

Agero first touched down and converted for a 7-0 lead before Billy Odhiambo who benefitted from Injera’s massive counter ruck on England’s Dan Norton after the restart raced to score with Agero missing the conversion for 12-0 half time lead.

Sammy Oliech wasted a try scoring opportunity in goal area before England came back via Richard De Carpentier’s brace and Ruaridh Mc Connochie’s last gasp try to seal the result for the 17-12 victory.

Kenya defeated Japan 17-12 for the third time this season in their final match to remain third on the Pool A standings with five points from three matches.

England led the pool with maximum nine points from three matches having beaten South Africa 21-15 for the second time this season.

Meanwhile, men’s and women’s teams at Sydney wore Keep Rugby Clean T-shirts yesterday to highlight the ongoing fight against doping.

World Rugby adopts a zero-tolerance position on doping and implements a rigorous testing and education policy.

World Rugby Anti-Doping General Manager Mike Earl said: “Keep Rugby Clean day is the focal point of World Rugby’s anti-doping campaign and is a show of unity against doping by all involved in our game.

“Players, referees, team staff, officials and everyone involved in the event here in Sydney wore the Keep Rugby Clean T-shirts to show our collective will to keep doping out of our sport and to promote the spirit of integrity to all aspiring players in the crowd or watching around the world”.

World Rugby has given anti-doping education to more than 15,000 players in recent years and continues to be committed to protecting clean athletes through intelligent testing and values-based education.
