BIG PRIZE IN STORE FOR Deejays: Will Homeboyz be crowned Sevens champions this weekend?

Rugby fans are in for a treat this weekend with National Sevens Series leaders Homeboyz likely to be crowned champions at the inaugural Nanyuki Sevens, the penultimate round, at the Nanyuki Sports Club.

Having already garnered 82 points from the opening four rounds, Nanyuki could prove to be the crowning moment for the Deejays with one leg to spare (Christie Sevens) and they only need to reach the Main Cup semis for them to claim their maiden National Sevens Series title.

Homeboyz are nine points ahead of their closest rivals Kenya Harlequin, while third placed Impala are 17 points adrift.

The Deejays, who have featured in all the four Cup finals, (Prinsloo and Dala triumphs coming in between losses at Kabeberi and Driftwood), headlines Pool A which includes disposed champions Nakuru, Mean Machine and hosts Nanyuki Jackals.

Although destiny is in Homeboyz’s own hands, head coach Simon Odongo believes it is not yet celebration time and urged his players to play their hearts out and produce a Hollywood ending.

"Of course we deserve to win the title, but we are still taking it one game at a time. We know it won’t be easy, but our target is to play in the remaining two finals and collect all the maximum points," Odongo said.

‘’Most teams will be out to prove a point against us, but winning the Cup is our ultimate goal. There is no shortcut to success and we have to beat the best to be the best.

"At the moment, nothing is secured yet, we won’t rest until we play all our games. The crowning is pegged on a lot of other things working our way as well. So, for now we will take care of what can," he said.

As Homeboyz embark on second last leg of what has been their most exciting season, today, Harlequin will be battling with Mwamba, Nondescripts and the Catholic Monks in Pool B. Kabras Sugar face Impala, Blak Blad and Kisii in Pool C, while fourth placed Strathmore, Kenya Commercial Bank and Western Bulls fight for the quarter-final slots in Pool D.

The Nanyuki Sevens tournament started yesterday with Division Two competition that enters the knock out stages today.

Meanwhile, Mwamba RFC players will be offered internship and employment opportunities by their new sponsors Modern Coast Transport.

"We know that Mwamba has young and ambitious players and we want to help them progress with their academic and career paths off the pitch," Modern Coast Communications Manager Jervis Sundays said.

"We will offer internship opportunities to those who are in still in colleges and universities. For those who have graduated, we shall try to absorb them in our company."

The transport firm recently announced a Sh3 million sponsorship deal for the club and also gave the club a branded bus for transport to matches for the 2016/2017 season.
