David Rudisha’s victory at the Olympics yesterday set a celebratory mood for Eldoret residents.

Moments after winning a gold medal in the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, his wife Lizz Naanyu hosted a party for street children in Eldoret to celebrate the achievement.

And Rudisha’s coach Bro Colm O’ Connell, who was born in Cork County in Ireland 68 years ago, also decided to celebrate his birthday yesterday and alongside the achievement of the Olympics, medallist who was the toast of the town.

“When chips are down and our country needs a hero, we call on King David. And he did it in style. We are proud of him and I am humbled to have played and continue to play the part of a coach and mentor to such an iconic person and athlete. David has given me the perfect birthday present,” said O’ Connell.

Rudisha’s father Daniel, the 1968 Olympic 4x400m relay silver medallist, was equally upbeat.

“I am very happy in particular because he has accomplished what I never achieved as an athlete,” he said.

Rudisha’s wife Naanyu and her two children six-year-old Sheryl and 11-month-old Patience, alongside Olympic 3,000m steeplechase champion Ezekiel Kemboi’s wife Jane, distributed food to street children as the best way to share in Rudisha’s joy.

The decision to offer food to street children, Naanyu said, was brought up by her daughter Sheryl who woke up at 4am to watch her father win a gold medal in Olympics. “As we were watching the event, my daughter suggested we celebrate her dad’s impressive win with street children and I saw it ideal because Rudisha’s glory is also the country’s win,” said Naanyu.

While she congratulated her husband for fulfilling his promise to win the race, Naanyu said Kenya should expect more gold medals in Rio. Young Sheryl could not hide her joy and she said her father lived to his word by winning gold.

“Before he left for Rio, he promised me that he will bring gold. He has been working hard in his training and I love him,” she said.
