My mother always reminded me how blessed it is to be young. But as they say, the folly of youth would have me wonder what this was all about. “Remember now your Creator in the days of your youth. Before the difficult days come and the years draw near when you say, I have no pleasure in them.” (Ecclesiastes 12:1)

This challenge given by God to the youth needs to be given to every generation. To remember the Creator is to go back to the beginning (Genesis) where God created the heavens and the earth. To know that there is a God, creator of the sun, moon and stars.

“For by him all things were created that are in heaven and on earth; visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through him and for him.” (Colossians 1:16)

The call to remembrance is now, not tomorrow or next week or month or year. In the early years of your life is when we need to magnify God. We must all be willing to consecrate ourselves this day to the Lord. Today is the day of our salvation.

Remembering the Creator entails giving to the Lord glory and strength due to His name; bringing an offering as we come into His courts; worshipping Him in the beauty of His holiness; and trembling before Him. This means that we must remember first, His exaltation by invoking praise, worship and reverence.

For the Lord is holy, omnipotent, omniscient and omnipresent. Second, His nature – He is God and there is no other. He is compassionate, merciful and full of love. In Him, we have redemption through His blood and the forgiveness of our trespasses according to the riches of His grace.

Third, by obeying and respecting all His commandments. The Pharisees wanted to trap Jesus by asking him which was the greatest commandment in the law. The answer he gave them is one that we need to heed today: To love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul and mind.

Fourth, we remember the creator now because difficult days are coming and we need to develop habits that will enable us to endure them. Habits and traits that one develops in youth remain engraved in them for the rest of their life.

Now is the only time in eternity that we are assured of having. Now is when we are ready for the harvest. For death is not a respecter of persons; it comes to the old as well as the young.

Fifth, we remember the creator despite the challenges and obstacles we may face. Moses overcame the obstacle of being raised away from his parents who had given him up. He later became a great leader of a big nation.

Joseph overcame the obstacle of a dysfunctional family. His father had two wives and two mistresses. His brothers hated him, plotted to kill him and later sold him as a slave. While in Egypt, he was falsely accused of attempted rape and was imprisoned. He later became the Prime Minister of Egypt and saved his family from famine and starvation.
