The national athletics scene focuses on the Kisii Golf Course this morning where KCB/Athletics Kenya Cross Country final meeting takes place.

Thirty-two athletes are in the running for the Sh1.2 million jackpot.

Athletics Kenya’s Publicity Officer Peter Angwenyi confirmed the 32 runners are in contention for the jackpot in the junior men, junior women, senior men and senior women categories.

Each winner in the four categories will take home Sh200,000. Angwenyi said runners up will pocket Sh50,000, third placed Sh30,000 while fourth placed finishers will take home Sh20,000 for the jackpot prizes.

On Thursday, national athletics coaches Julius Kirwa and David Leting toured the course and certified it.

The winner of the first and second legs of the series in Kangundo and Eldoret, Nicholas Togom is billed as favourite to win the Sh200,000 jackpot in the senior men’s 12km race. All other winners will pocket the same amount.

Togom will face fierce competition from Linus Chumba who finished second in Eldoret and Embu and Timothy Kiptoo who won in Kapsokwony.

Tabitha Chelagat, who has performed consistently in previous legs at Kangundo, Kang’aru and Kasokwony has a big chance of scooping the top prize in the 8km senior women category.

Lucy Kabuu, Emily Muge, Phanencier Jemutai, Winfrida Kwamboka and Venaiza Chemutai are other athletes in contention for top prizes.

Alice Aprot who has two wins at Sotik and Kapsokwony will lead the pack in the 6km junior women race.

Other runners vying for the top prize in the category include Mercy Chebwogen, world junior cross-country champion Faith Chepng’etich, Magdalene Masai, Eva Cherono, Pauline Eyapan and Jepkorir Kipkoech.

In the 8km junior men’s race, William Malel who won in Eldoret and Kangundo will be among the main contenders.

He will face off with Japhet Korir, Ernest Ng’eno, Gideon Kipketer and Leonard Barsoton. The locals will be led by Grace Momanyi, Caroline Nyakawa and Edwin Mokua, a student of Boruma Secondary, who ran the fastest 10km and led at the Chiba Ekiden last month.

All top Athletics Kenya officials led by chairman Isaiah Kiplagat will be present in Kisii to witness the jackpot winners. Also expected are vice chairmen Jackson Tuwei and Paul Mutwii, secretary general David Okeyo, deputy Commandant of Prisons Benjamin Njoga and Director of Education in charge of Quality Assurance, Enos Oyaya.
