Two players have been dropped from the national team Harambee Stars just days after the team resumed training for the March 26 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Angola in Nairobi.

The two Fredrick Onyango of Sony Sugar and Mathare United’s Simon Mburu are nursing injuries making them doubtful for the upcoming match late this month.

Onyango’s is particularly serious because he has a recurring back injury. He was initially scheduled to join the team in January for the Nile Basin tournament, which was held in Egypt, but he was ruled out by his current injury.

On the other hand Mathare’s Mburu was injured in training and did not play for his club in the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) match against Sony Sugar at the weekend.

In the absence of the two, coach Zedekiah Otieno said they have embarked on replacing them and will use the matches this weekend to identify suitable players.

"The injuries are serious and we cannot have the two back in time for the match against Angola. All the technical bench members are going out this weekend to identify those that will replace them," he said.

Stars broke camp yesterday to allow the players to join their clubs for this weekend KPL matches.

The team has been staying at the Kasarani hostels while training at the Nyayo National Stadium, but are expected to move to a nearby hotel to save on the time it takes them to travel to the training venue.

"We are currently spending at least two hours on the road and by the time the players arrive at the training ground, they are tired. However, we are happy that the board is making arrangements to move us to a nearby facility," said Otieno.

The board is also making arrangements to buy new kit for the team. Various samples have already been considered and the team is expected to have a new look ahead of the March 26 encounter. The new kit will also include the team’s official attire, which has been changing in the past years.

Stars must win the match against Angola to revive their hopes of qualifying for next year’s Africa Cup of Nations finals after managing to pick only one point in the last two matches.

Stars lost the opening tie 1-0 away to Guinea and were held to a goalless draw by neighbours Uganda in the second match played at the Nyayo Stadium late last year.

Meanwhile, fans in Tunisia will have to wait a bit longer to enjoy league football again after plans to resume matches this weekend were cancelled writes BBC Online.
