Makini School impresses in England tourney

Hot on the heels of the World Cup end and the start of the English Premiership, Makini School sent three youthful football teams to Manchester, England, to participate and hopefully bag medals in the recently concluded Keele Youth Tournament, formerly the Umbro Cup.

This is on the backdrop of the school’s previous international sports successes, where students have won medals for their exemplary display of talent in various sporting activities in the international arena. These include last year’s silver medal win by Samuel Ndonga in a swimming meet in South Africa, and George Mumo’s Bronze medal win in Korea’s World Junior Tae Kwon Do competition earlier this year.

Makini School sent under-11, under-12, and under-13 football teams to compete in the hotly contested July event, playing other teams from Nigeria, India, Egypt, Sweden, Japan, Spain and the host country England among others.

The under-13 team reached the semi-final of the tournament after scoring a total of 10 goals in matches played against Spain, England, Sweden, Japan, and Nigeria.

With their third place finish, they bagged the bronze medal in their category.

The under-11 team also managed a third place win, bagging the bronze medal after scoring a total of 27 goals in matches played against teams from USA, Egypt, and even Kenya. In this category Makini’s Paul Ndunga was the top scorer managing a total of 13 goals. The Makini and the Nigerian Greenfields teams were the first formal school teams to reach the semi-finals.
