Kenyan Premier League champions Mathare United had a dream start in their maiden regional appearance after beating Kartileh of Djibouti 3-0 in the opening match of the East and Central Africa Club Championship at the El Mereikh Stadium, Sudan.

Crispine Ochieng’ was at the end of dribbling move also involving midfielders Titus Mulama and Kevin Ochieng’ to score first past a stranded Abdulrahim Youssou in the Kartileh goal in the 42nd minute.

After the 1-0 half time lead, Jafar Gichuki scored from close range in the 50th minute for a 2-0 lead.

The Djibouti champions clearly looked lightweight and the Slum Boys did not appear willing to take their opportunities in the first half. Apart from mid fielders Andrew Oyombe and Titus Mulama, the rest of the forwards lacked drive.

The Kenyans were livelier in the second period and their domination was evident through the third goal scored by their skipper, Anthony Kimani who headed in Kevin Ochieng’s cross.

Striker Paul Ambembo had numerous missed chances and was the subject of questions by the media in the post match interviews of Kimanzi. "A player can have a time like that. We have just come from a mid-season break and the sharpness comes slowly.

"And, overall this is satisfactory. If you can score three goals from a month’s recess, that’s encouraging." But headed for harder clashes including against host team El Mereikh Kimanzi was questioned about Mathare United’s scoring capabilities but he retorted.

"I don’t read too much in scoring many goals. This tournament will be won by the team that scores even one goal in the final."

Kartileh coach Said Moussa said his players struggled in the opener. "It was our first time to play outside our country. The boys could not cope with the atmosphere. But we shall recover and play better in our coming matches."

Kartileh are the second best team in Djibouti.
