A survey by Uchaguzi 2022 indicates that persons living with disabilities had less-desirable experiences while voting on Tuesday, August 9.
Most of those who voted disclosed there wasn’t any system in place to assist them with the voting process.
"One voter reported that they had a hard time accessing the voting booth while another shared that they had to ask for assistance to get to the polling station,” the report by Uchaguzi 2022 revealed.
Blind persons, on the other hand, expressed there was a need to have someone help them during the voting process.
There was, however, a positive response reported by a voter, Sammy Brayo from Juja polling center in Kiambu County, who was born without arms but was able to cast his vote by using leg.
Uchaguzi monitored conversations on social media and submissions through the toll-free USSD *603# and SMS line 23102 to put together the report.
"We were able to verify 46.15 per cent of the reports coming in. 52.01 per cent remained unverified while 1.83 per cent were noted as false,” read the report.
"We verified 10 per cent of the reports through our trusted observers on the ground while 23 per cent through corroborating evidence from social media and mainstream media platforms," the firm said.
