We have no excuses for poor showing, says Ayimba

Kenya National Rugby Sevens Coach Benjamin Ayimba has said there are no excuses for their recent dismal performances in the penultimate legs of the IRB sevens circuit.

The Sevens team returned to the country on yesterday with nothing to show for the last two legs and Ayimba believes the team did not deserve to get points from Scotland and England.

"We cannot say we were tired because all the other teams were also tired, we have to adapt to playing even when we feel the strain of playing in eight gruelling legs of the circuit," said the former Sevens captain.

"I have heard people say that we should have overhauled the team or we should have changed some of the players, but have you seen any of the other teams on the circuit changing players in the last two legs?" he quipped.

"We have to play at their level even if we do not have the resources, you cannot compare us to the professionals out there, it is like throwing a seven-year-old in the deep end and expecting him to swim comfortably. In fact we have held our own against all odds." Ayimba went on to defend his team selection by saying: "I am going to use the English Premier League as my example, when have you ever seen a great team like Manchester United resting their star player Wayne Rooney? The only time he sits on the sidelines is when he is injured. It is in the same capacity that I will continue to play my best players in every game as I chase every win."

Expect no changes

Ayimba did not mince his words for critics who have taunted the team, "expect no changes in the team as we prepare for the Commonwealth games, looking back at the season, I would have changed nothing if I had a choice because I believe that we are trying what we possibly can."

Also to echo Ayimba’s sentiments was his captain Humphrey Kayange who said: "People can criticise the team for the poor performance but the fact is that we try our best each time we get into that pitch, at no point does a player wear his national jersey and put on less than 100 per cent."

The team was received in pomp and colour by staunch fans who vowed to always follow the team no matter their shortcomings.
