Man who threatened to kill family members after drinking dog's blood shot dead

Police in Rongo shot dead a man after he killed a dog, drunk its blood and threated to kill members of his family with a machete.

The deceased, identified as George Otieno, also attempted to attack police officers who had intervened.

Trouble started when the 40-year-old took a machete and started chasing his firstborn son before going to his mother's homestead, at Kaluoch sub-location in Rongo sub-county, and butchering the dog.

In a bizarre incident that has left his family members and neighbours stunned, the man beheaded the dog and started drinking its blood.

Peter Okiring, the Rongo sub-county police commander, said the man threatened to kill his family members as he chased them with a machete.

His family members were forced to flee to safety while his mother locked herself inside her house.

"His brother ran to the police station and reported the incident after which he was escorted by our officers to the home hoping to arrest the suspect," Mr Okiring said.

After spotting police officers, the man ran to his house, picked a machete and attempted to attack the officers.

According to the Rongo police boss, the man was asked to surrender but declined.

He charged towards the officers with the weapon before he was shot twice.

"The police started by firing in the air to scare him away. He wanted to kill a police officer who was armed gun," Okiring said.

"Police officers only use a gun for self-defense when their lives are in danger. The officer used the gun according to the law," he said.

The man's body was taken to Rosewood Mortuary in Rongo.
