EACC grills executives over graft

The anti-graft agency yesterday concluded interrogating 15 former and current Nairobi County executives.

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) interrogated the 15 over the Sh357 million garbage tender and the Dandora Stadium project (pictured), which is said to have cost the taxpayer Sh350 million. The 15 officers join a long list of other senior officers who have already been grilled over the projects.

Yesterday, which was the final day of the interrogations, three officials were grilled namely former Lands, Urban Planning and Housing Executive Charles Kerich, Education and Social Services Executive Pauline Waititu and ICT and E-Government Executive Newton Munene.

EACC Chief Executive Officer Twalib Mbarak summoned the officials last month after an earlier invite through the acting county secretary was not honoured, with the governor claiming his officers were in Mombasa to discuss the county budget. He also termed the investigation a witch-hunt.

“Further to our letter dated November 15 on the request for documents and statement recording. The listed officers to present themselves at Integrity Centre without fail on the revised dates,” he instructed.

The Standard has established that the EACC detectives are investigating three parallel cases against the county government. The investigators have narrowed down on procurement irregularities, misappropriation of public funds, inflated payments, fraud, conflict of interest, Sh1 billion unexplained wealth and bribery.

Yesterday, the commission’s insiders attributed the summons to its strategy to build a water-tight case against Governor Mike Sonko, who has already been grilled over a garbage collection tender scam, as they also sought cabinet memos and minutes.

EACC accuses the governor of giving inaccurate info in his self-declaration form when he sought clearance to contest for his seat. If found culpable, he could face a five-year jail term, a Sh5 million fine, or both.
