State agency starts vetting civilian gun owners

The Firearms Licensing Board has explained the vetting process that civilian gun owners will undergo starting today.

Chairman Charles Mukindia said the process was mandatory and those targeted in Nairobi region would appear before a team at the Police Pavilion in South C from today to Thursday.

“They are supposed to appear with all their supporting documents for the licences acquired, all firearms and ammunition and the holders need to book online through www.firearms.or.ke,” said Mr Mukindia, adding that other regions would be informed of the date of their vetting.

Upon verification, the certificate holders shall go to the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) headquarters for ballistic analysis.

Exempted from the vetting and not required to book are serving and retired personnel from the Kenya Defence Forces, National Police Service, Kenya Prisons Service, Kenya Wildlife Service, National Intelligence Service, Kenya Forest Service and the security sector.

“However, they will be required to fill in a form and obtain a unique identification number from the vetting venue and then go to DCI for ballistic tests,” he added.
