Nairobi MCAs clash over formation of committee

NAIROBI COUNTY: Members of Nairobi County Assembly exchanged blows during debate on a Motion to form an ad hoc committee to investigate claims of skewed allocation of development funds.

The debate was characterised by heated exchanges which later degenerated into chaos when when Speaker Alex ole Magelo ruled the pro-committee had carried the day.

Waithaka Ward Representative Anthony Kiragu and his Eastleigh South counterpart Nelson Masiga exchanged fisticuffs before the melee spread to the rest of the House.

The two MCAs had differences regarding the formation of the committee.

The matter was first raised on Thursday last week by Kiragu, who claimed that four wards, namely Ngara, Mihang'o, South C and Kasarani had received the lion's share of Sh1.25 billion set aside for roads development.

DISMISSED CLAIMS

The four wards, he said, were allocated over 70 per cent of the budget. Wednesday, those opposed to the formation of the nine-member committee dismissed the claims as the rival camp pushed for its constitution to probe the claims.

"We want to establish the criteria used in allocating this money. We are to investigate who is culpable'' stated Kiragu.

Leaders of the House were not spared in the fracas, with some of them being hit with objects as the speaker watched the drama helplessly from his seat.

Armed Administration Police officers had to be called in to restore order after the sergeants-at-arm failed to contain the scuffle which lasted 25 minutes. The Motion was sanctioned and the committee is expected to embark on probe soon.
