Venezuelan officials in Kenya to push murder probe

Postmortem exercise conducted on her body revealed she had been strangled.

Nairobi Area police boss Anthony Kibuchi said investigations are progressing well and they expect to charge some of the suspects either on Monday or Tuesday depending on the outcome of the investigations.

“They are writing more statements before they appear in court. We are making good progress in this murder incident,” said Kibuchi.

The Venezuelan officials are said to have visited the scene of the murder on Sunday before viewing the body that is lying at the Lee Funeral Home in Nairobi.

Mr Saragay was arrested after his diplomatic immunity was waived. He had been charge d’affaires after former ambassador Gerardo da Silva left the country unceremoniously in May following allegations of sexual harassment.

Mr Saragay was Saturday taken to the Diplomatic Police Unit offices where he was questioned for hours by a team led by Nairobi CID boss Nicholas Kamwende before being locked up at the local police station.

Kamwende was still recording statements from the suspects on Sunday.

He told the Standard they expect to press charges of murder as soon as they are through with their investigations.

“Definitely we will take some people to court. It is a matter of time,” said Kamwende.

Police said Ms Fonseca, who arrived in Nairobi on July 15, had not been given a police escort nor was her residence guarded by police.

The acting ambassador had been staying at a hotel and had only moved to the embassy’s residence in Runda two days before she was killed on Thursday night.

Before her body was discovered in her bedroom, she had held a party at the residence in which several people are said to have attended on Thursday night.

The body was discovered on Friday by security after she failed to wake up for duties as usual.
