Former club captain Peter Gitau beat 256 golfers to win this month's CIC Insurance Golf Day tournament at the par-72 Limuru Golf and Country Club at the weekend.

Playing off handicap 15, the Limuru Club player posted 41 Stable ford points after combining 20 points on the front nine and 21 on the back nine.

He played pars on the first and third holes, but dropped shots on the second, fourth and sixth holes and picked birdies on the fifth and seventh holes before dropping two shots on the eighth hole and recovered with a birdie on the ninth for a score of 20 points in the first nine.

In the second nine, Gitau started with a bogey, hit a par on the 11th and double-bogeyed on the 12th and 13th. He then hit a par on the 14th hole but dropped a shot on the 15th, before posting back-to-back pars on the last three holes for a score of 21 points.

PLAYED WELL

"I played well, despite the captain trying to make the greens very hard for us. I focused on what had brought me here today and that’s how I won," said an elated Gitau after receiving his prize from CIC Insurance CEO Nelson Kuria, who graced the day-long event.

Handicap 14 Njehia Mwangi was the men’s winner on 41 points, while Njuguna Thiaka, also a 14 handicap player, needed a better second nine score to beat Joe Wainaina on count back to settle for the men’s runner-up position on 40 points.

Wainaina, playing off 12, finished third on 40 points. Jeniffer Murigu, playing off handicap 27, was the lady winner on 41 points followed in the handicap 15 by Grace Kimera on 37 points.
