Alley named Derby winner

Three-year-old geld Tornado Alley and veteran jockey Julie McCann have been officially declared the 2009 Kenya Derby winners. Jockey Club of Kenya (JCK) presented the trophy to Alley’s owners Zarko Petkovic, John Limb and Paul Walker and McCann in a brief ceremony at Ngong Racecourse last Sunday.

Silverdale, ridden by Ibrahim Wachira won, the race on April 5 but the Stewards of Racing overturned the results after the winning horse tested positive for prohibited substance caffeine.

Alley finished second to Silverdale in the event that was the feature race. Kenya Derby which is the most lucrative race in the JCK calendar has a winning prize money of Sh362,600. And by being declared winner of the Kenya Derby, McCann has now won two out of the five classic meetings this season. The stout jockey guided R Karlsen-owned Camelay to the Kenya Oaks victory two weeks ago. She trains the horse.
