Covid-19: 30 die, 135 in ICU as 745 test positive in last 24 hours

Kenya on Monday recorded 745 new Covid-19 cases in the past 24 hours, from a sample of 6,209 raising the country's caseload to 212,573.

In a statement, Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe said the new infections take the country’s positivity rate to 12.3 per cent and cumulated tests conducted so far to 2,197,015.

Out of the new patients, 394 are male, whereas 351 are female, with the youngest carrier being a seven-day-old infant, and the oldest aged 99.

Of the new cases, 23 are foreigners while the rest are Kenyans.

In terms of counties distribution Nairobi leads with 441, Kiambu 67, Muranga 23, Machakos 21, Kajiado, Makueni, Uasin Gishu 20 cases each, Meru and Mombassa 19 cases each, Nakuru 14, Busia, 11, Nyeri 11, Kilifi 9, Turkana 7, Embu 6, Kisii 6, Kitui 5, Trans Nzoia 4, Nandi 4, Homa Bay 2, Kirinyaga 2, Kwale, Laikipia 2.

Mandera, Samburu, Taita Taveta, Tana River, West Pokot, Baringo, Elgeyo Marakwet, Garissa, Isiolo and Kericho one case each.

Kenya’s Covid-19 toll reached 4,179 after 30 patients succumbed to the virus in the last 24 hours.

Total recoveries so far stand at 197,468 after 161 patients recovered from the disease in the last 24 hours with 83 from the Home-Based and Isolation care programme while 78 are from various health facilities in the country.

Of the total recoveries, 158,061 are from the Home Based Isolation Care programme while 39,407 are from various hospitals countrywide.

A total of 1,822 patients are currently admitted to various health facilities countrywide, while 7,796 patients are on Home Based Isolation and Care.

One hundred and thirty-five (135) patients are in the ICU, 61 of whom are on ventilatory support and 67 on supplemental oxygen. Seven patients are on observation.

Another 611 patients are separately on supplemental oxygen with 575 of them in general wards and 36 in the High Dependency Unit (HDU).

Vaccination

Kenya has at August 9, 2021, administered 1,804,375 vaccines across the country.

Of these, the total first doses are 1,105,470 while the second doses are 698,905.

The uptake of the second dose by Priority Groups is as follows: Aged 58 years and above 214,722, others 205,802, Health Workers 120,155, Teachers 102,007 while Security Officers are at 56,219.

The uptake of the second dose among those who received their first dose is at 63.2 per cent with the majority being males at 55 per cent while females are at 45 per cent. The proportion of adults fully vaccinated is 2.6 per cent.
