Jose Mourinho wants Manchester United chief Ed Woodward to make rivals Tottenham an irresistible £60million offer for Eric Dier.

United boss Mourinho has been pressing executive vice-chairman Woodward all summer for key signings, after coming sixth in the Premier League last term in his first year in charge.

The Reds missed out on Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann, but have since splashed £75m on Everton striker Romelu Lukaku.

Now Mourinho wants another holding midfielder, despite Michael Carrick penning a contract extension until 2018.

Mourinho initially thought he could prise Dier away from Spurs with a bid of around £40m and an offer to double the player's wages.

But Tottenham have stubbornly refused to sell and recently stressed they are prepared to resist all bids for Dier, after insisting he is not for sale.

Yet Mourinho is refusing to concede defeat and is still lobbying Woodward to get his man.

It is even understood Mourinho could even ask United to go as high as £60m to land one of his priority targets.
