Jose Mourinho wants Manchester United's Europa League tie against Rostov called off because of the state of the pitch.

Mourinho is angry UEFA are allowing the last 16 first leg tie to go ahead on the patchwork Olimp-2 stadium surface, with the United boss fearing for the safety of his players.

United sources have confided that if Mourinho had his own way, the game would be called off, despite the logistical problems it would create for him in an already congested fixture list.

Mourinho likened the surface to the one in the Olympic Stadium in Beijing, which forced the abandonment of a pre-season friendly with local rivals Manchester City last summer.
