Abubakar Ondino secured the overall win of CIC Insurance Group golf tournament at the par-72 Kakamega Sports Club over the weekend.
He inked an impressive score of 40 stableford points to star during the tournament which saw a field of 70 golfers drawn from host Kakamega Sports Club, Nandi Bears Club.
Others were; Nakuru Golf Club, Kenya Airforce Golf Club, Kenya Railway Golf and Kisii Sports Club battle it out for the top prizes.
Playing off handicap 27, Ondino starred courtesy of a superb front nine from where he picked 21 stableford points made up of two pars, four bogeys, and three triple bogeys.
Having an equally better back nine from where he made 19 stableford points comprised of a lone par, five bogeys, two double-bogeys and a single triple bogey to secure his win in style.
Despite stiff challenge from handicap 31 L Chebichii who also returned 40 stableford points who bagged Overall second prize.
On a score of 38 and 37 stableford points, L Luchivya and J Akhonya were overall winners’ third and fourth prize respectively.
“I enjoyed my game.” Ondino said “I played alongside a formidable flight made up of two vice-captains and I’m happy that I emerged the best amongst the best!”
Adding, “I was a nice day for me, I thank God that I won.”
In Division one, handicap 10, J Mundia had the last laugh edging, G Ombito and R Angote on countback after posting similar scores of 36 stableford points each.
In the Nines, John Saina chalked 23 stableford points to claim First Nine prize while K Wakwabi won the Second Nine prize with 24 stableford points.
Taking the Longest Drive men title was Dr Kimeli Mutai as Faith Chemutai won in the lady’s category both from Nandi Bears Club. Nearest to Pin prize went to E Kemboi while M Okongo won Best Effort for his troubles on the course.
At the par-73 Nakuru Golf Club, handicap 6, Charles Agwenyi carded a total of 39 stableford points to clinch Syngenta Golf Tournament Overall title.
A sizable field of 116 golfers participated during the tournament played under clear blue skies for a better part of the morning before play was interrupted by downpours midafternoon.
Angwenyi denied veteran home lady golfer Susan Matharu, playing off handicap 23 the bragging rights by three clear points at 36 stableford points as she settled for Overall winner second.
Taking Overall winner third prize on a score of 36 stableford points was handicap 6, John Mburu.
In the Sponsors category, handicap 15, Moses Karuga posted identical score of 18 stableford points for a total of 36 stableford points to outshine the rest.
Handicap 32, Lucy Mukuru returned 34 (20+14) stableford points to lift Lady Winner prize as another veteran home golfer, Dr S Malik playing off a respectable handicap 6, carded 34 (14+20) stableford points to win Senior winner prize.
Top club amateur and Captain, Luther Kamau playing off -1 won the Gross prize with 35 (18+17) stableford points with promising youngster handicap 9, Wesley Kihumba taking Junior winner prize on a score of 36 (19+17) stableford points.
Best visiting golfer was Edgar Njenga playing off handicap 15 upon returning to the clubhouse with a score of 38 (21+17) stableford points.
While Teresia Muturi and Fredrick Mbuthia were First and Second Nine winners with 20 and 18 stableford points respectively.
