Football is a game played by gentlemen and watched by hooligans while golf involves gentlemen and watched by the same. So goes the old time adage.

In a bid to demystify the game of golf, leading media house, the Standard Group has come on board to broadcast the 2020 Magical Kenya Open slated for Karen Golf and Country Club on March 12 to 15 in Nairobi.

“This is meant to bring the game closer to the people as Kenyans are so passionate about the sport,” explained Standard Media Group Managing Director Broadcast, Joe Munene in a press briefing in Nairobi yesterday.

The Sh50 million partnership with Kenya Open Golf Limited (KOGL) will see the media house, through its KTN Home brand, beam live proceedings of the tournament for the entire four days.

The extensive coverage will also be on Spice FM and various digital platforms run by the Standard Group.

“We will be live both on and off the course from 11am -1pm (+3 GMT) and 2pm - 5pm on March 11-14, the coverage will proceed to 7pm on the last day,” Munene said.

KOGL chairman, Peter Kanyago, admitted that the three year deal which started in 2019 has seen Kenya marketed as a sports tourist destination from the incisive coverage.

Kanyago said the Karen course is great in shape with magnificent greens and fairways ahead of the competition.

“The championship will involve 144 participants of which eight pros and six amateurs will be Kenyans,” Kanyago said.

He said the lucrative prize money of Euros 1.1 million will able motivate the local players to give their best on the pitch.

“The overall winner will go home with Sh20 million. We look forward to better edition this season.

“We wish our players all the best as they prepare for the tournament,” Kanyago said.
