Golf: Stage set for amateurs’ stroke play championships

Leading male amateur golfers will converge at the par 71 Nyali Golf and Country club in Mombasa from Friday for the Kenya Amateur stroke play championships.

The 72-hole event, which counts towards the Kenya Golf Union (KGU) Kenya Amateur Golf Championships Ranking (KAGC) and World Amateur Ranking, has attracted 84 players.

According to a statement from KGU, who are the tournament organisers, top amateur golfers who have confirmed attendance include defending champion Alfred Nandwa from Kenya Railways Golf Club and current KAGC leader John Karichu from Limuru Country Club.

“Also drawn for the tournament are Uganda’s top amateurs Ronald Rugumayo (handicap 0), Adolf Muhumuza (handicap 0) and Asaba Dennis (handicap +1), all from Toro Golf Club,” said KGU.

The statement said leading Tanzanian amateurs Victor Joseph (handicap 1), Amani Saidi (handicap 3), Isaack Wanyeche (3), Richard Mtweve (3), John Katto (9) and Seif Mcharo (3) are also in contention.

Youthful players led by top Kenyan junior golfer Agil Is Haq, Daniel Nduva, Mathew Wahome, all from  Nyali, will also be chasing glory in the Nyali championships.

The first round will begin at 12pm on Friday before players turn to 36 holes on Saturday and 18 holes on Sunday.

The winner will automatically get a slot to the Barclays Kenya Open 2018 after satisfying other KAGC conditions.

Sponsors of the event include Deloitte, Equity Bank and AGOL-Africa Gas & Oil Company Ltd.
