Kenya Forest Service golf day ends in style

Home player and handicap zero Alfred Nandwa emerged the overall winner at the final KFS Golf Day, beating handicap 20 Duncan Mwaniki on countback.

Nandwa overcame an impressive field of 82 golfers on Saturday at the 9 hole, par 71, at Njoro Country Club.

The course, which has produced some of the best golfers in the country, played difficult, returning a competition scratch score (CSS) of 74 for both men and women.

Nandwa played impressive golf posting a total of 38 stableford points (19-19).

He also won the longest drive men’s prize. He attributed his good performance and victory to accurate chipping and excellent putting. “The course was challenging, though it is in great shape,” noted Nandwa who is also the club’s vice captain.

Handicap 20 Duncan Mwaniki took home the men’s winner’s prize with 38 points (19-19).

The runner’s up men’s prize went to handicap seven Stephen Mathai with 37 points (18-19).

Handicap 15, Kenya Forest Service Chief Communications Officer Charles Ngunjiri posted an impressive score of 37 points (17-20) to claim the sponsor’s prize.

Handicap 36 Anne Mathenge won the ladies’ prize with 32 points (16-16), while handicap 27 Susan Njuguna settled for the runners up with 30 points (14-16).

Other winners of the day were Esther Karuga who won the longest drive (ladies) and Susan Gichuki winning the nearest to the pin. Handicap 19 Edward Thuiya emerged the guest winner with 24 points (13-11).

Speaking on behalf of the KFS Director, Senior Deputy Secretary in the Ministry of Environment, Water and Natural Resources, Onesmus Kibuna, thanked the golfers for the great turnout and called for their active participation to increase Kenya’s tree cover.

He said Njoro and its environs has great potential for tree growing and encouraged members to get in touch with the Kenya Forest Service officers for professional advice to ensure best returns on investment.
