FKF President Nick Mwendwa claims CS Amina wants to remove him from office

The Football Federation President Nick Mwendwa has accused Sports Cabinet Secretary (CS) Amina Mohamed of planning to remove him from office illegally.

The accusations comes after CS Amina on October 15 directed the Sports Registrar to undertake inspection of Football Kenya Federation (FKF) in accordance with Section 52 of the Sports Act.

The national football governing body is in the eye of a storm over how it spent Sh244 million on the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations finals.

During an interview on Zilizala Viwanjani sports show on KTN News channel on Monday, the FKF boss said that the accusations and investigation only came at a time he was under immense pressure from football stakeholders following Harambee Stars' embarrassing loss to Mali in World Cup qualifiers a month ago.

"These reports are not fabricated I want to tell you as the President of FKF that the CS does not want me in office because since AFCON, I have been in office under three Cabinet Secretaries, Hassan Wario, Rashid Echesa and Amina Mohamed. We went to AFCON with Amina and she was happy with the preparations," said Mwendwa.

He further accused the government of colluding with some characters in football to ensure he was removed from office.

"When we returned, we had problems with one of the Principal Secretaries and we went to DCI for the AFCON sh240m funding from the Government. During the election period, we were under investigation by DCI for five months. In 2020 we had elections and the government wanted to set up a committee for the elections," said Mwendwa.

Mwendwa added that since Sports CS Amina ordered the Sports Registrar to investigate the FKF’s accounts over alleged misappropriation of funds, the relationship between the federation and the Ministry of Sports has deteriorated.

"Harambee Stars are in camp, Michael Olunga jetted in last night but until now his travel ticket has not been reimbursed by the Ministry despite sending an invoice last month. Starlets were in camp to play South Sudan but the Sports Fund and the Ministry have not given us the money yet we have a debt in office," added Mwendwa.

"I have been pleading with CS and her PS to have floodlights at Nyayo Stadium because CAF are threatening to ban the stadium but I have not received any reply, I've been neglected."

The Football Kenya federation (FKF) president, however, said that he is ready to adhere to the orders directed at him by Sports Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed to audit the federation accounts.

The Inspection committee was due to hand their findings to Amina on Monday.
