Sergio Ramos left out of Spain squad for Euro 2020, Aymeric Laporte gets call-up

Sergio Ramos has been left out of Luis Enrique's 24-man Spain squad for Euro 2020.

The Real Madrid legend has regularly captained his nation over the years, and was part of the Spain team that won the World Cup in 2010, but has struggled with injuries this season.

As a result, the 35-year-old centre-back will play no part in this summer's competition, which kicks off on June 11.

Instead, Manchester City's French defender Aymeric Laporte has been handed a call-up in the Spaniard's place.

Enrique had the opportunity to name 26 players in his squad due to the impact coronavirus has had on the footballing world.

But the former Barcelona boss has opted to name just 24, with not one single Real Madrid player in his team.

"The Aymeric Laporte decision has nothing to do with the Ramos situation," Enrique said. [Ramos] is a top player, can help our national team a lot, plays at one of the best clubs in history.

"Please don't mix Ramos not being in the squad with call-ups for others. I'd have liked him to be here, to have recovered."

A handful of Premier League stars also made the cut alongside Laporte.

There's a place in the squad for Chelsea defender Cesar Azpilicueta, Manchester City midfielder Rodri, Liverpool star Thiago Alcantara and Wolves forward Adama Traore.

Blues keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga is another noticeable absence, with Manchester United's David de Gea, Brighton shot-stopper Robert Sanchez and Athletic Bilbao's Unai Simon all favoured over him.
