Manchester United will need to pay Swansea £1million the next time Daniel James makes an appearance for 20 minutes or more.

James joined the Red Devils last summer and enjoyed an impressive debut campaign, playing 46 times for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side in all competitions.

According to The Athletic, part of the agreement of the £15million deal was Swansea would receive an extra £1million when James made 40 appearances.

However, an appearance is only constituted under the terms of the agreement if James either starts or comes off the bench for at least 20 minutes.

Last season, seven of the Wales international's appearances didn't fall into the bracket, meaning he must rack up another before the clause is triggered.

The seventh of those such games came in United's final game of the season - their Europa League semi-final defeat to eventual winners Sevilla.

Swansea may have expected to receive the windfall before now, given James had made 37 qualifying appearances for United with five games of the Premier League season remaining.

The Red Devils were still in FA Cup and Europa League contention at that time, but he only played for 20 minutes or more on two further occasions.

James played in both Wales' UEFA Nations League victories over Finland and Bulgaria in the international break and will be in contention when United return to action.

Owing to their fixtures in Europe at the end of last season, Solskjaer's side will not play on the opening weekend of the Premier League season.

United take on Palace on Saturday week, and if James does not play 20 minutes in that game, the clause could be triggered three days later when they travel to either Reading or Luton in the Carabao Cup.
