KPL remains hopeful on league restart

Kenyan Premier League (KPL) management is still confident of resuming play and completing the season despite the extension of cessation of movement into and out of Nairobi and Mombasa by 30 days.

Jack Oguda, the KPL CEO said the governing council would be in a position to make the final decision this week.

“We are going to meet this week and deliberate on the recent developments especially with the extension of cession of movement in the capital city which host majority of KPL matches,” he told Standard Sports yesterday,

“I believe everything is possible and therefore we will share out our resolutions and of course seriously taking into consideration the health and safety of our players,” he said.

Last week, KPL announced plans to resume the league once they get the go ahead from the government despite the Football Kenya Federation's (FKF) decision to end the 2019/20 season in May and declaring Gor Mahia champions.

Kakamega Homeboyz CEO Bernard Shitiabayi believes it is still possible to resume the league even in September, giving an example of last season when KPL had a crunch fixture when pushing to finish the season and run in line with Fifa calendar.

“Everything is possible. It is not too late to complete the season,” he said

However, Western Stima boss Laban Jobita said it would be impossible for clubs to play within the short period.

“KPL should consider the financial implications before making any decisions. KPL itself has been struggling with finances since the beginning of the season and therefore we should be careful,” he said.

KPL insists they are the body mandated to run the league as per the agreement with FKF and, therefore, any decision touching on the league should be made by them.
