FIFA must work with government, respect SDT — Nyamweya

Former Football Kenya Federation president Sam Nyamweya now says world football governing body, Fifa, has no option but to work with the government to sort the election crisis in the local body.

Nyamweya further said yesterday that Fifa must not only be seen to be impartial but should also reach to all stakeholders.

The former FKF boss said Fifa should withdraw the letter rubbishing the decisions reached by the Sports Disputes Tribunal (SDT) on the federation elections.

The Tribunal, in its ruling, had also invalidated FKF’s election for the second time in a row only for Fifa to quash the ruling.

Last month Fifa trashed a decision by the SDT pointing out that FKF’s National Executive Committee’s term had expired.

The letter signed off by Fifa’s Chief Member Associations Officer, Veron-Mosengo-Omba stated, “For the avoidance of doubt, the current FKF Executive Committee members, including its president office shall remain in office.”

Fifa also faulted FKF for subjecting itself to the SDT.

“The FKF has surprisingly subjected to the SDT by its own initiative while it was not obliged to do so as per its own Statues.

Nyamweya, however, insists Fifa is practicing double standards.

“What is astonishing is that if you look at that letter, it more or less implies that Fifa does not recognise the rulings of the SDT and that is very disturbing?

He added: “If that letter was in good spirit, it should first recognise the ruling of the SDT then we can all sit together and come out with a solution.

Nyamweya said the ruling by the SDT is the hallmark of the laws of this country and must be respected.

“The SDT is a body recognised and anchored with the laws of this country through parliament. The constitution of this country is higher than all other laws.”

“Fifa must be seen to making the playing ground level for all stakeholders and not side with the outgoing office whose four year term has expired.”

Nyamweya said it is interesting that Fifa does not recognise the ruling of the SDT yet they have called a meeting with the same SDT and sports CS.

Curiously, Nyamweya said Fifa had in the first instance directed FKF to abide by the initial ruling of the SDT last year.

“That letter has a lot of misgivings and I do not believe it was written in consultation with Fifa president and the legal team of the world governing body. This is mischief and disrespect to the laws of Kenya.

“It is upon Fifa to work with government and stakeholders if the elections are to take place in Kenya.”
