Mombasa Senator Mohammed Faki has called on football voters to elect experienced and visionary leaders capable of bringing back the lost glory in the sport.

“We are looking for leaders, who are committed to take Kenyan football to another level. Kenya must be a powerhouse in football like athletics and rugby among other sports,” said the senator.

Faki, who plays for Mombasa Sports Club, a non league side and Mombasa County side Wazee Health FC urged those, who will vote in the forthcoming football elections not to allow themselves to be misled by power-hungry people who have no passion for football.

“It is a bad practise countrywide where we elect leaders based on non-sporting reasons, but this is the time to say no to bad leadership in football,” said Faki, who is a lawyer by profession.

“Football clubs that will kick start the election process need to be vigilant and elect good leaders at the grassroot, which should be reflected at the County and national elections.

“Football is our way of life and part of our culture.

“We should ensure quality leaders are in charge for the sport to prosper,” added the senator.

Faki spoke when he handed over uniforms to 16 teams that participated in the Swaleh Khamis memorial tournament at Bomu stadium.

Changamwe won the trophy after beating Magongo Rangers in the final.

The senator sponsored the tournament played last December, but awards were awarded at the weekend.

The tournament attracted teams from Changamwe constituency in Mombasa County.

Faki said bad decisions in failing to elect leaders with proven track record in football administration will affect the sport in the next five years.

“My passionate appeal to the electorate is to make smart decisions in the forthcoming football elections,” said the senator.

FKF Mombasa sub branch Chairman Alliy Goshi applauded the efforts made by the senator in engaging the youth.

“Donating football kit goes along way to stimulating social development and co-existence amongst the youth.
