Tribute: Former All Stars, Stima coach Omino hailed

A number of football coaches and players have send their heartfelt messages to former Kisumu All Stars head coach Henry Omino who passed away yesterday at his home in Ng’iya, Siaya County.

The 71-year-old died after a long battle with Thyroid cancer.

“He passed on at our home here at around 1.20am this morning,” his wife Christine Omino said.

Omino was first diagnosed with thyroid cancer in 2015 and has been on medication since then.

His family said his condition worsened in the last four days and was due to travel to Nairobi yesterday for check-up.

Owino started his football journey at the then Kisumu Posta where he ended taking up the coaching role before moving to Agro Chemical and Western Stima.

In 2017, he left Stima, but returned two years later to lead the 2019-2020 KPL debutants Kisumu All-Stars before he was shown the exit door earlier this year due to poor results.

Former AFC Leopards player Francis ‘Killer’ Oduor referred to Omino as one of the most extraordinary coaches.

“Omino was my coach at Kisumu Posta and he moulded me to the person I am today.

“Having worked with him at Kisumu All Stars until January, the knowledge and input he gave to the team and me will forever have an impact despite him leaving us,” said the former All Stars assistant coach.

Nicholas Ochieng, CEO of Kisumu All Stars, also condoled with the family of the deceased terming Omino’s stint at All Stars as magical.

Football Kenya Federation also condoled with Omino’s family: “Our heartfelt condolences go out to the family and friends of immediate former Kisumu All Stars coach Henry Omino who passed on early Friday morning. May his soul rest in peace, and may his family and friends find solace during these trying times.”
