Former Kisumu All-Stars veteran coach Henry Omino is dead.

The tactician succumbed to thyroid cancer on March 20 at his rural home in Siaya County at the age of 71.

Speaking exclusively to Game Yetu, his son Marvin Ochieng confirmed the sad news of his passing on.

“It is true. My father passed on yesterday night at home. He was set to travel to Nairobi the next day for treatment but unfortunately, he couldn’t make it,” he said.

Omino was first diagnosed with thyroid cancer in 2015 and has been on medication since then.

According to his family, his condition worsened in the last four days and he had already secured funds for his checkup in Nairobi that was set for Friday, March 20.

Owino started his professional coaching career with Agro Chemicals before joining Western Stima.

At Stima ‘Zagallo’ as he was fondly known in the football world was an instant hit leading the side to a sixth position in the 2016 Kenya Premier League Season.

He became the first coach to win the coach of the month twice in a row in 2016 after the introduction of the award in the KPL.

He added to his tally in 2017 to three before he was dropped to be the Technical Director of Western Stima relinquishing the head coach position to Richard Makumi.

After two years away from footballing activities, Omino was called to lead the 2019-2020 KPL debutants Kisumu All-Stars.

His meeting with his former side Western Stima who share Moi Stadium Kisumu as their home ground produced fireworks, a match his former employer won.

Late last year he expressed fears of losing his job after a series of poor runs from his side.

He was axed by the club earlier this year together with his Assistant Coach, Andrew Aroka and Goalkeeper Trainer Joseph Ongoro.

Henry Omino has left behind 10 children and two wives.
