Defending champions Gor Mahia yesterday moved to the summit of the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) standings after a hard-fought 2-0 win over hosts Nzoia Sugar at Mumias Sports Complex.

K’Ogalo captain Kenneth Muguna set the record Kenyan champions on their way with a 10th-minute goal before new-signing Clifton Miheso grabbed his first of the season with a sublime free-kick at the half-hour mark to make it 2-0 before the break.

Kevin Juma had a chance to equalise for the hosts from the spot early into the second half but saw his penalty kick hit the crossbar as the Green Army held on to win on a rainy day in Mumias.

The win, third in a row for head coach Steven Polack, saw Gor Mahia return to the top of the premier league table with nine points.

Polack was full of praise for his charges for leaving behind their Caf Champions League disappointments that saw them lose to USM Algiers and returning to winning ways in the local league.

“We needed his win especially after the CAF disappointments and I am glad the team played aggressively and ensured we are back to the top of the league,” he said.

His opposite number Godfrey Oduor said his charges lost because they did not capitalise on their chances.

“Gor used their chances in the first half to beat us. We came back stronger but all they did was to manage the game. If we had scored the penalty the game would have changed,” said Oduor.

Coach Polack made changes to his side with Ghanaian striker Francis Afriyie starting in place of Nicholas Kipkirui and saw Tanzanian goalkeeper David Mapigano return in the starting 11 after he missed K’Ogalo’s 2-0 loss to USM Alger in the return leg of the first round Caf Champions League match over the weekend.

K’Ogalo started on a high note pressing for an early goal but it was the visitors who threatened first through a counter-attack with Leonard Kasembeli failing to beat the goalkeeper in the fifth minute.

Eight minutes later, inform captain Muguna broke the deadlock when he sent a low shot to the unguarded right side of Nzoia’s goalpost.

The goal ignited the match as Gor pushed forward for a second goal but Nzoia’s defence stood tall clearing the ball off their playing half.

Mapigano was then called into action in the 19th minute when Collins Wakhungu almost responded but the Tanzanian stopper remained focused.
