David Beckham becomes co-owner of English club alongside five Manchester United legends

David Beckham has bought a stake in Salford City FC – joining his Class of 92 former team-mates as joint owners of the club.

Former Manchester United star and England skipper Beckham, 43, has bought a 10 per cent stake in the National League club.

It means Beckham , Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Nicky Butt, Gary and Phil Neville now have a 60 per cent stake in the club, with Singapore businessman Peter Lim holding the majority share of 40 per cent.

Beckham, who is also behind the Major League Soccer franchise Inter Miami CF in the US, said it was always his intention to join his former United team-mates in becoming involved in Salford City.

“It's a proud moment for me to join Peter Lim and the Class of 92 lads as an owner of Salford City FC,” said Beckham.

“It's a really special club and a special group of people. My early years in Manchester were all spent in Salford.

“I grew up there in many ways, so to be able to finally join the club and the lads today is a great feeling.

“Salford City has achieved so much success in a short space of time, the fans are incredible and I'm really excited to be spending more time in Salford again.”

In a joint statement, the Class of 92 said: “From the very beginning we wanted David to be involved and be with us on this incredible journey. However, circumstances and commitments didn't allow that.

“Now the time is right and it is another exciting time in Salford's history. It is important to emphasise that nothing will change in the day to day operations of the club, but to have us all together was always the vision. We grew up in Salford, carved our careers here and that's why we are doing what we are doing at Salford City.

“We have grown to love this club and the fans and we would like to welcome David to the club and to becoming part of the Salford City family.”

The Class of 92 took over Salford City in 2014, since when the club have won promotion in three of the last four years and are now one step below League Two.
