How Jordan Henderson helped Jose Mourinho escape ban over touchline comments

Manchester United used Jordan Henderson as an example in Jose Mourinho's misconduct case against the FA.

Mourinho was cleared on Wednesday over his comments on the touchline following United's win over Newcastle last month.

Mourinho was charged with misconduct after he mouthed an obscenity in his native Portuguese into a TV camera.

The United boss said "fodas filhos de puta", which translates into English as ‘f *** off sons of b***** s" as he walked down the Old Trafford touchline.

But Mourinho successfully contested the charge after the case was not proven by an independent commission - much to the surprise of the FA.

United cited the case of Liverpool captain Henderson as part of their appeal, reports the Times.

Henderson was caught swearing at Croatia boss Zlatko Dalic during the recent UEFA Nations Leaguematch in Rijeka.

The match was played behind-closed-doors, meaning TV microphones picked up what the players were saying during the game.

England star Henderson was heard shouting "are you the f****** ref?" at Dalic but was not punished by the referee or UEFA.

Despite Mourinho being cleared this week, the FA are ready to launch an appeal against the decision.

The FA brought in lip readers and linguistics experts to build a case against the United boss, but the commission rejected the charge, meaning Mourinho has escaped punishment – for now.

An appeal against the finding could still be lodged.

United, who beat Everton 2-1 last time out, return to Premier League action against high-flying Bournemouth this weekend.

The clash on the south coast comes ahead of a huge week for Jose Mourinho's men - both domestically and in Europe.

They travel to Turin to face Juventus in the Champions League on Wednesday before the first Manchester derby of the season against fierce rivals City at the Etihad.
