Southampton are interested in a move for Chelsea defender Gary Cahill.

The Saints take on the resurgent Blues on Saturday having won just once in the top flight this season.

They have kept only two clean sheets in the League so far and have also conceded late goals in their home defeat to Leicester and their home draw to Brighton.

On Tuesday night Mark Hughes’ side also shipped a late goal in their Carabao Cup tie at Everton. They were fortunate, however, to go through on penalties.

The Saints want to bring in an experienced name to help the side to see games out.

Highly-decorated Cahill, 32, has won every domestic honour in the game with Chelsea but has admitted he is considering quitting the club in January in search of regular first-team football.

Although he has since rowed back on his comments he has interest from a number of clubs in the Premier League with his contract coming to an end next summer.
