Football: Kenya’s 2014 champions, the Standard Group to contest Road to Anfield tournament

The fifth edition of Standard Chartered Road to Anfield five a side football tournament was launched in Nairobi yesterday.

This year’s edition will be held on February 25 at the green and lush St.Mary’s School in Nairobi.

Standard Group, the 2014 winners, is among the 32 teams that will contest the tournament expected to be tough and competitive owing to the list of entries.

The winners of local qualifying tournament will head to Tanzania for an East Africa regional battle where the winners will clinch a ticket to Liverpool’s historic ground Anfield for the global showpiece.

As usual,the winners of the regional event will be treated to a four day tour, which includes attending an English Premier League match at Anfield and a professional training session with Liverpool legends and coaches.

While in Anfield,the regional winners will battle teams from UK,Singapore,India,Hong Kong, Korea, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Nigeria, Ghana and Gambia for glory.

The regional contest is a departure from last year’s event where 2016 winners, Capital FM , got a direct ticket to Anfield at the local tournament.

Standard Chartered Bank’s CEO,Lamin Manjang said the 32 teams drafted for the tournament includes teams from the media and from the bank’s clients that will battle for the single slot to the United Kingdom.

“The winners from the regional tournament will then represent their country at the Standard Chartered Trophy Finals, to be played at Liverpool Fc’s home ground, Anfield on May 21,”Manjang said. Past winners including the Standard Group,Pan African Life Insurance currently Sanlam Insurance(2013) and Capital FM will be looking for a repeat of the feat.

The Standard Group ended last year’s tournament in group stages while last year’s local winners Capital FM ,went ahead to win the trophy at Anfield after they beat reigning champions South Korea 3-2 in a pulsating finals.

The Standard Chartered Trophy Road to Anfield event is an international five a side football tournament which is held in selected countries across Africa, Europe and Asia as part of the partnership between the bank and Liverpool FC.
