National Super League side Police FC are this year’s Jamhuri Day Cup winners.

Police came from behind to defeat Wazito 3-2 in a pulsating final at Nyayo Stadium on Monday.

Meanwhile, Nyayo and Kasarani volleyball clubs were crowned men and women Jamhuri Day Sitting Volleyball tournament champions after winning 2-0 in their categories.

Nyayo won 24-15, 25-0 against Kasarani in the men’s final, while their women counterparts lost 24-26, 23-25 to Kasarani in the women’s category.

Visiting Machakos Youngsters Taekwondo U-17 team also displayed their skills and techniques to emerge tops in the games sponsored by the Sports Ministry.

The Wazito versus Police football match was quite physical, more so, in the first half.

Wazito displayed a good game in the first 20 minutes as they raided Police in quick succession, but poor finishing saw them miss numerous scoring chances. Wazito, who finished 11th in the NSL, took the lead in the 24th minute through John Mabia.

But the lead lasted just two minutes as David Oluoch restored parity with a crisp free-kick outside Wazito’s danger zone. Police piled pressure on Wazito, who kept on losing concentration. Their efforts were rewarded in the 37th minute when Emmanuel Kapchanga headed from a corner as Police led 2-1 at halftime.

The second half was a balanced affair. Police, however, had the better of the exchanges. In the 82nd minute, the law enforcers added their third through Michael Khamadi, who headed in a Benjamin Megason corner.

The huge margin did not deter Wazito, who kept their opponents on their toes. But Wazito’s raid did not end in futility as Kennedy Isaiah narrowed the margin to 3-2 after he tapped a loose ball inside Police’s six-yard box with one minute to full time.

While handing over the trophy to the winners, Director of Administration, Department of Sports Development, Harun Komen, said; “Sports Ministry is glad to sponsor the Jamhuri Day games.

“These are some of the ways in which the Ministry is supporting local talent among the youth, since sports is a symbol of our national unity.”

Wazito’s head coach Frank Ouna said he used the occasion to gauge his eight new players and he will sign another six ahead of the 2017 NSL season.
