England striker Andy Carroll was threatened with a gun in an attempted robbery as he drove home from training this afternoon.

The 27-year-old was driving home from West Ham's Rush Green training ground in Romford, Essex, when he was threatened by two men riding motorbikes.

The two men gestured that they had a gun and attempted to block the striker's £100,000 Mercedes G-Wagon as he tried to speed away.

Carroll raced back to the training ground where club staff are understood to have called police at around 12.30pm today.

The suspects chased Carroll to the training ground but had fled the scene before police arrived.

Police are now investigating the attempted robbery.

A statement from his current club West Ham said: "West Ham United can confirm an incident targeting one of our players on Wednesday 2 November. The matter is now being handled by the police."
