STARLETS DIM UGANDA: National team off to dream start in Cecafa tourney

Kenya women football national team, Harambee Starlets

Esse Akida scored a brace to inspire Harambee Starlets to a 4-0 win over Crested Cranes of Uganda yesterday.

With the win, Starlets sent out a strong statement as the 2016 Cecafa Women Football tournament started at the Technical Centre, Njeru in Jinja.

Mary Kinuthia opened the flood gates in the 21st minute with Akida adding a second in the 55th minute. A third goal came from Vivian Corazon in the 74th minute before Akida added a fourth in the 90th minute.

The win yesterday was Kenya’s second straight win over their neigbours in a span of three months.

Dorine Nabwire, who was given a starting berth by Harambee Starlets coach David Ouma after missing out of the national team for a number of years, was always a threat to the Ugandans from the first whistle. She was fouled in the third minute, but Cheris Avilia’s free kick was hit straight at the Ugandan wall for a fruitless corner.

From then on Harambee Starlets controlled the proceedings, but the Crested Cranes were not ready to go down without a fight as Laki Otandeki proved a threat to the Kenyan defenders in the right wing.

Two minutes later Nabwire was brought down outside the area but Wendy Achieng’s shot went wide.

Harambee Starlets then conceded a free kick just outside the area, but Stellah Nassuna’s kick was pushed out of play by Dorcas Shikobe for a throw in.

Crested Cranes continued to pile more pressure, but Harambee Starlets stood firm before Kinuthia found the back of the net, thanks to a cross from Achieng to give the visitors a lead in the 21st minute.

The hosts made only two changes to the side that lost 4-0 to Starlets in an international friendly match in July.

Head coach Majida Nantanda gave England-based defender Jean Sseninde her international debut and forward Otandeka also making it difficult for the Kenyans.

The changes did not deter Starlets as on resumption Akisa atoned for her missed chances as she slotted home a second goal in the 55th minute.
