Harambee Sand Stars coach Rajab Babu has injected new blood to his team in preparation for the return match of the Africa Beach qualifier against Ghana in Accra, next week.
Babu confirmed the team is set to start its residential camp tomorrow for a 10-day training before they fly out on September 14 for the return match on September 18.
Kenya lost 10-3 in the first leg last week at Pirates beach, Mombasa and have a gigantic task ahead to overturn the first leg defeat.
“I have decided to bring on board experienced players who have the knowledge of beach football,” said Babu in an interview yesterday.
Babu has included Ulinzi’s defender and midfielder Mohammed ‘Rio’ Hassan and midfielder Omar Mbogi.
Former Bandari player Alfred Oluoch, former Harambee Sand Stars defender Abdullahi Mohammed and two youngters Salim Budes and Awadh Chuli, who play for Mombasa local teams, have also been named.
“With proper strategy, we can beat Ghana at home with even a bigger margin and qualify for the Africa Beach Championships in Nigeria in December,” said Babu.
Meanwhile, Bandari coach Ken Odhiambo has blamed the poor performance by his team on a congested diary.
Odhiambo said his team played 10 matches within 15 days thus exhausting the players.
He said this was an uphill task for him as many of the players had injuries.
The coach who is preparing the team to take on AFC Leopards this weekend in Mombasa is optimistic the team will do well in the remaining seven matches before the conclusion of the league.
During the first leg match in Nairobi Bandari lost 1-0.
He said Bandari is coming out strong and is eyeing to finish the league among the top eight finishers.
He assured fans of improvement and urged them not to judge him harshly.
“We are currently 11th on the league log and I am optimistic of recapturing the Gotv Shield,” said Odhiambo.
Bandari won the GOtv shield after beating Gor.
