The Nairobi City County Alcoholic Drinks Control and Licensing Board will host a two-month 7-Aside football tournament.

Dubbed TIKI TAKA Challenge Cup, the tournament will be played in the county’s 17 constituencies in a campaign against drug and substance abuse.

Over 120 teams featuring both boys and girls aged between seven and 15 years, both in an out of school, will feature in the tournament.

The teams have been divided into two regions (West and East) with matches being played on league basis at the group stage, before proceeding to the knock outs and then the finals.

In Nairobi West, the matches will be staged at Kinjanjui, Mutiini, Woodley and Laini Saba grounds with the Eastern venues include Camp Toyoyo and others to be communicated later.

The tournament is themed Punguza tei, sare madree na jamaa mtaa ing’are” (cut down on alcohol intake, quit the drugs and clean the environment).

“During the tournament, we will have strong-themed messages against drugs and substance abuse that will be relayed all the time especially during half time,” said Liquor Licencing Board chairman Vincent Shimoli. “In addition, addicts will be identified and help accorded where necessary.”

“We are going to work with four rehabilitation centres to reclaim the addicted youths including Jericho, Mbagathi (to be constructed), Ngara and Ngaira health clinic,” added Shimoli.

Board secretary Judah Abekah observed that Nairobi has one of the highest proportions of substance abusers when compared to the national average.

“We will be targeting the youth from all over Nairobi, from the slums, rich and poor neighbourhoods,” said Abekah adding it will be held for the next eight weekends.

Abekah observed that Nairobi has one of the highest proportions of substance abusers when compared to the national average. The organisers will distribute 350 soccer balls amongst the participating teams to facilitate their participation tournament.
