Falcao to return to Monaco following disappointing spell at United and Chelsea

Chelsea flop Radamel Falcao has confirmed he is returning to Monaco after being told he is no longer needed by the Blues.

The 30-year-old, on loan from the French club, has again been an expensive disappointment after vowing last summer to prove his critics wrong.

Now his parent club are offering to rescue him from his Stamford Bridge nightmare. He said: "In February, Chelsea told me that they were no longer counting on me, so I will not be continuing with that club.

"Monaco made a big investment in me and they want some return on that. They want me back at the club for next season.

"I need to have minutes, to play, and we'll see what happens. Monaco want to see what my position is in a year, to see what possibilities I have."

Chelsea have targeted moves for Everton's Romelu Lukaku and Napoli's Gonzalo Higuain for this summer.

Falcao was allowed to leave Manchester United at the end of his loan spell 12 months ago after just four goals in 29 appearance.

He took a wage cut to remain in the Premier League and join Chelsea. But he has managed just one goal for the club in 12 appearances over the course of an injury-ravaged campaign.

After moves to River Plate and Atletico Madrid fell through during the January transfer window, Chelsea finally made it clear to him that he was surplus to requirements.

Falcao said: "River approached me to know the possibility to return but at that time Monaco, Chelsea and me had in mind to continue in Europe.

"Then in February, Chelsea told me that I was not going to be taken into account for the future and I tried it [to go back to River] but it was too late."
