Louis van Gaal hailed by Manchester United chiefs

Louis van Gaal has been praised by Manchester United chiefs – for putting his faith in young players.

Van Gaal , whose future is uncertain with Jose Mourinho favourite to succeed him this summer, has turned to youth in United's injury-hit season.

The United boss has given debuts to 14 youngsters in his two seasons at United, including teen striker Marcus Rashford , who has five goals in eight games.

United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward will have the final say on Van Gaal's future, in a tough season that has seen the Reds exit the Champions League, Europa League and fail to mount a title challenge.

But Woodward's right-hand man, United group managing director Richard Arnold, praised Van Gaal's commitment to youth, suggesting the Dutchman still has the backing of the Old Trafford hierarchy.

“I’m really excited about the young players,” said Arnold.

“I think the thing that’s come through this year is you've seen the success of our academy system and the way it has worked and you see the young players coming through.

“There’s a whole army of people in tears, seeing a player score the first time, and that’s an important part of what are and we’re all set for the future.”
