After three postponements, the much-awaited Football Kenya Federation (FKF) elections finally went on smoothly yesterday at the Kasarani Indoor Arena. Sports Cabinet Secretary Hassan Wario and his Principal Secretary, Richard Ekai, were at the venue in a historic appearance by a cabinet minister at a football election.

World governing body, Fifa and the African Football Confederation (CAF) delegation led by Leodega Tenga, FIFA Head of Associations Primo Corvaro and FIFA Development Officer Ashford Mamelodi, were also present to oversee the election.

Outgoing FKF president Sam Nyamweya was calm, confident and collected, presiding over the first session with the delegates and officials following every point he made.

Unaware of what he was about to let out, the delegates applauded Nyamweya as he promised a smooth transition in his speech. To the shock of many, Nyamweya announced his withdrawal from the race at the tail end of his speech citing personal reasons.

Contrary to presidential loser Ambrose Rachier’s claims in an interview after conceding defeat that money exchanged hands, this was not witnessed.

“People voted with their stomachs, not their conscience. All in all I must congratulate the elections team for a job well done,” Rachier said.

Outside the Indoor Arena where the election and vote counting were happening, supporters of the candidates were waiting anxiously to usher in the favourite candidate.

However, it was the Nick Mwenda camp, under the Team Change banner, that burst into dance and jubilation after he gained a landslide victory.
