The Sports Tribunal has ruled that AFC Leopards' warring factions should form a joint caretaker committee to run the club.

Sitting in Nairobi yesterday, the tribunal ruled that each faction should produce three members to sit in the caretaker committee, which will be chaired by a member of the tribunal.

While delivering the ruling, Elyna Shiveka, a member of the board, also said the committee would come up with an election timetable in the next 120 days.

Leopards have been embroiled in wrangles with two factions, one led by Mathews Opwora and another by Dan Mule, fighting for control of the club.

Opwora laid claim to the club after he managed to register his faction with the Registrar of Sports, while Mule draws his authority from members, who appointed his faction to head the club during a Special General Meeting (SGM).

According to Suleiman Angulu, a member of the Dan Mule faction, the ruling will help move things in the club.

“At least, we can now embark on player recruitment, open a joint account, as well as carry out recruitment of members afresh,” he said.

The warring factions will return to the tribunal on January 26 for a review of the status.

Leopards' woes have been plenty, both in and out of the playing field. The club lost their shirt sponsorship when Mumias Sugar suspended its support of the team.

What followed was a mass exodus of players as the club could not afford to pay them. Even head coach Zradvko Logarusic could not withstand the heat and left.

In a related development, AFC Leopards could lose influential midfielder Bernard Mangoli. The player leaves the country today for trials in South Africa. Mangoli has been in demand after he emerged as one of the best midfielders last season.

It is reported that a number of clubs are interested in his signature, including St George’s of Ethiopia, with whom he attended trials last week.

If he leaves, Mangoli will become another high-profile departure following the exit of goalkeeper Wycliff Kasaya and former team captain Martin Imbalambala.
