Second tier football side Nakumatt FC brought to a screeching halt SportPesa Premier League champions Gor Mahia’s dream of a domestic treble with a 4-2 penalty kicks win in the GOTv Shield Cup, yesterday.

Nakumatt battled back after Michael Olunga’s 40th minute goal to level scores five minutes after the interval.

Peter Nzuki beat Gor Mahia goalkeeper Jerry Onyango to cap a sweeping move initiated by Tyronne Owino as Giovanni Triani’s side pegged back the Kenyan champions.

Nakumatt will now contest the final against Bandari on Sunday with the winner representing Kenya in the Confederation Cup.

Victory for Nakumatt is a vindication of Giovanni’s demands for patience, especially after a horrid start in the second tier FKF Premier League. Buoyed by their late resurgence in the FKF Premier League, which saw them finish fifth, Nakumatt made the most of Gor Mahia players' disgruntlement over their allowances.

The match was delayed by slightly over one hour as the K’Ogalo side refused to take to the field demanding their full allowances. Nakumatt on the other hand were purring, what with Sh100,000 incentive for each of the players and technical bench if they beat the mighty Gor.

The ugly scene, which is now characteristic of Kenyan football, was sorted when the club’s top brass called an emergency meeting to resolve the dispute.

Nakumatt, who fielded three former Gor Mahia players, led by the towering defender Donald Mosoti, Wycliffe Kasaya and Christopher Wekesa dug in for an epic fight.

Gor Mahia’s on-form duo of Michael Olunga, Meddie Kagere and the ever-running Innocent Wafula picked up the gauntlet as they camped inside Nakumatt’s half with custodian Kasaya saving Olunga’s effort in the tenth minute while Mosoti denied Kagere a scoring chance with a timely tackle shortly after.

But it took 40 minutes to breakdown Nakumatt as Olunga curled in a free kick.

Nakumatt's substitute goalkeeper Zamu Adisa saved Godfrey Walusimbi’s penalty while Meddie Kagere saw his spot-kick go wide. Nakumatt’s converted theirs through Cornelius Juma, Donald Mosoti, Mustafa Mohammed and Peter Nzuki.
