In one of those rare occasions for Kenyan sportsmen, Commonwealth Games javelin champion Julius Yego yesterday got a worthy mention from President Uhuru Kenyatta in his speech at the Global Entrepreneurship Summit attended by United States president Barrack Obama at the United Nations Office in Nairobi in Gigiri.
Kenyatta praised innovative young people who have gone out of their way to become the country’s ambassadors.
“As large parts of the world age, Africa grows younger by the day. The youthful sons and daughters of Africa are our incredible resource.
“They are reaching for a new future in which their innovation and curiosity will transform the world. Kenya typifies this change.
“This ingenuity is also exemplified by Julius Yego, who logged onto YouTube using an old mobile phone, and learned how to throw the javelin and this year he recorded the world’s longest throw,” Kenyatta said.
Coming from a nation known for its achievements in running events, Yego become the first Kenyan to win in a field event at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland last year.
He currently holds the world's leading throw after throwing 91.39 metres at the Diamond League meeting in Birmingham, England last month.
Yego will be hoping to add a World Championships title to his role of honour next month in Beijing, China.
