Former Harambee Stars defender Ricky: Bobby should consult coaches to cure Stars

Former Harambee Stars defender Ricky Solomon has implored coach Bobby Williamson to work closely with the football coaches association to solve Kenya’s perennial under-achievement.

The Kenya Football Coaches Association (Kefoca) chairman’s comments follow Kenya’s tame exit from Africa’s second tier tournament, CHAN, at the hands of Ethiopia on 2-0 aggregate loss.

“The loss speaks volumes of our league and a strong statement that coach Bobby should look beyond the Kenyan Premier League for talent. He needs to engage the coaches’ association to try and solve this heartache,” Solomon said, yesterday.

“To be fair to Bobby, he worked with what is available to him. However, he needs to reach out to Kefoca so we can offer a helping hand in scouting and designing a curriculum for development of talent,” he said.

“Year in year out we sing the same song. I think Bobby should be bold enough to build bridges with the coaches for we are at his disposal,” Solomon said.

Ethiopia restricted Kenya to a 0-0 draw in Nairobi on Saturday with a tactical display fashioned out by equally technically polished Walya Antelopes.

Kenya needed to overhaul a 2-0 reverse suffered in Addis Ababa on June 21, but limped off from the preliminary round on their third attempt.

Former Harambee Stars defender Gabriel Olang decried the level of technical ability of Kenyan players, a problem he attributes to lack of sound technical education.

“Ethiopia just came here to honour the fixture. They did everything back home and knew what they needed to do in Nairobi.

“Don’t be fooled by aerial bombardment you saw on the day. They Ethiopians dealt with them with relative ease,” Olang, who turned out for Kenya during the 1987 All Africa Games, 1988 and 1990 Africa Cup of Nations finals said.
